Scottsdale, Japan

I'm all for an adventure. Live in a foreign country, eat raw things of unknown origin, act out the word "chicken" in a restaurant. But, we all need a break from the different. We all need a trip to the burbs sometimes... a trip to Scottsdale.

Little did we know that, while we hacked away in the smoke-filled coffee shop each morning, downing our hardboiled egg and white bread with jam, that there was a gleaming Starbucks only one subway stop away from us. There was a Starbucks, a Gap, a Banana Republic, and a restaurant right out of a 1995 Friend's episode with gilded mirrors on the walls and maroon velvet couches. Ahhh... Can't you feel the home-ness of it all? Places I normally despise because of their sameness, suddenly look fresh and inviting. An ice-cold "glande ratte" and a bagel with "cleam cheese" awaited us as we rolled our super Japanese ninja stroller and sticky American child into the glorious air conditioning on Friday.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about our royal-like entry into the department store and the play area on top. I hope you don't lose sleep with excitement.
